According to a recent 12-week study, those taking a daily multivitamin & mineral supplement experienced sickness for shorter periods & with less severe symptoms.

Numerous studies highlight the importance of vitamins & suggest vitamin deficiencies are common. As people get older, the risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies that contribute to age-related immune system deficiencies rises. Research suggests than in the “Western World” more than one-third of older adults are deficient in at least one micronutrient, and often more than one.

Recent research just published measured a multi-vitamin supplement's effects on certain immune system indicators. Not only did the multivitamin group show improved vitamin C and zinc status in the blood but it was also noted that illness symptoms reported were less severe and went away faster than those experienced by the placebo group not supplementing with the multi-vitamin supplement. Days of sickness in the supplement group averaged fewer than three, compared to more than six for the placebo group. "The observed illness differences were striking," said corresponding author Adrian Gombart, professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the OSU College of Science and a principal investigator at the Linus Pauling Institute.
